在南蘇丹，由於缺乏乾淨的飲用水，五歲以下的孩童容易得到水媒病而夭折。本書以”A Long Walk to Water(尋水之心)”的故事為背景，道出南蘇丹長期的水資源問題；除了水媒病，當地的居民必須長途跋涉以取水，也有許多孩童因為費時的取水工作而無法到學校學習。Nya與Akeer姊妹雖然只是虛構的人物，但她們的故事真實反映了南蘇丹孩童的狀況。

這天Nya帶著妹妹Akeer取水，但妹妹今天卻反常地感到疲倦。Nya想辦法用拍手遊戲轉移Akeer的注意力，好不容易抵達水源地取了水，Akeer卻在回程的路上倒下了；焦急的Nya一摸，發現妹妹全身都在發燙，並漸漸停止哭泣變得安靜。妹妹生病了，很可能病得很重；於是Nya決定把好不容易取得的水倒掉一半，一手提著水一手背著妹妹，辛苦地一步一步走回遙遠的村莊。幸好，在接受治療後Akeer漸漸康復，也有很多人幫忙在村莊附近鑿水井，將來因不乾淨的水而生病的幼童也能逐漸減少了。

如同繪本的情節，有許多的組織致力於改善南蘇丹的水資源，例如Water for South Sudan；由Salva Dut成立，向各國募資、集結人力，在南蘇丹已挖掘超過340口井；在組織的努力之下，水媒病在南蘇丹的病情改善很多，愈來愈多的人民不必再跋涉取水，孩童也有時間接受教育。
