2001年，羅琳在一次與出版商的會晤中說，她會選擇以魔法世界中的動物為主題，因為這是她已經在《哈利波特》發展了許多內容的一個有趣題目。
華納公司在2012年9月12日發表了製作同名電影怪獸與牠們的產地 (電影)的計劃，將為三部曲，第一部定於2016年11月上映。
《怪獸與牠們的產地》是由哈利波特那一本所翻印過來的，故事背景為1926年紐約，主角是紐特·斯卡曼德(出生於1897年)，一位著名的魔法動物學家。在哈利波特系列小說中，奇獸飼育學（Magizoology, 由magical「神奇的」和zoology「動物學」結合而成）是學習如何照顧魔法動物的一門課。專門研究奇獸飼育學的人就稱為魔法動物學家。
《怪獸與牠們的產地》涵蓋了奇獸飼育學的歷史及詳述了75種世界上的魔法動物。本書中大部份的資訊來自於斯卡曼德先生跨越五大洲旅遊多年的觀察研究。這位虛構的作者指出第一版的《怪獸與牠們的產地》是當初在1918年時，秘境圖書的奧古特斯·沃姆先生委託他撰寫的，直到1927年才出版第一版。現在已經印到了第五十二版了。
本書從第一版起就是霍格華茲一年級新生的必備課本。我們並不清楚為何一年級新生就需要這本書，但他們在第三年才會上到奇獸飼育學。然而，本書所扮演的是一本百科全書的地位，特別是在學習黑魔法防禦術時。在鄧不利多寫的序中特別指出本書幾乎可以是個魔法家庭書架上必備的一本書，霍格華茲選它做為課本是額外附加的價值。
