About the Author 作者簡介

Lucy Maud Montgomery(露西.莫德.蒙哥馬利)was born in Clifton, Prince Edward Island in Canada in 1874. She was an only child. Montgomery’s mother died when she was 21 months old. Then she lived with her grandparents. They lived on a farm that was the inspiration for ‘Green Gables’.

Montgomery was an imaginative child. She liked boys’ activities like fishing, climbing trees and inventing scary ghost stories. In 1880 she started school. She already knew how to read and she started writing stories at nine years old. During her time at high school one of her poems was published.

In 1894 Montgomery went to university. She continued writing and in 1895 she published her first short story, for the fee of five dollars.

After university she worked as a teacher but then she left to become a journalist for a newspaper. She also wrote her stories before and after work. It was hard work and she soon left the newspaper to write full time.

In 1904 Montgomery finished writing her first book, Anne of Green Gables. It was rejected many times before it was published in 1908. Anne of Green Gables was translated into 20 languages. Other books include: Chronicles of Avonlea, Kilmeny of the Orchard, and Watchman and other poems.

In 1911 Montgomery married a minister, Ewen Macdonald. They lived in Ontario (Canada) with their children.

Lucy Maud Montgomery died at the age of 68 in Toronto.
