內容簡介
Yao-Chang Chen 陳耀昌, a physician turned writer, was one of Taiwan’s most prolific and influential historical novelists. His work uncovers forgotten pieces of Taiwan history and offers insights into periods of drastic societal transformation.

Among his acclaimed writings are three works of fiction—Puppet Flower, Lionhead Flower, and Bangas Flower—which together comprise his “Taiwan Flower Trilogy.” Translated by Timothy Smith and Tung-jung Chen, Bangas Flower is a collection of three narratives depicting three historically significant incidents that occurred in eastern Taiwan during the late Qing era: the 1877 Kiwit Incident, the 1878 Kaliawan Incident, and the 1886 Dazhuang Incident.

Through two short stories and one poetic drama, Chen reconstructs the violent clashes between Qing imperial forces and Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples during the Kaishan Fufan 開山撫番 (“Opening Mountains and Pacifying ‘Savages’”) campaigns.

Whereas official historical records have tended to be Han-chauvinistic, Bangas Flower is written mainly from the perspective of Indigenous Taiwanese. It exposes atrocities, documents profound suffering, and celebrates heroism in the face of formidable odds. This is a work of high literary imagination shaped by realism and verifiable historical evidence. Its pages are filled with honest criticism, strong kinship, empathetic concerns, and fresh lyricism. It is a tour de force that should not be missed.
