My name is Yuhan Hsieh. I’m a high school sophomore at Changhua Girls' Senior High School. I want to pick Thirteen Reasons Why as the theme of my reading experience because the concept of the story is not only meaningful but appealing to me, that’s a book worth reading again and again. So these are the reasons why I chose to read this book.

Thirteen reasons why

I have never read any novel such severe as this book, Thirteen reasons why.

It's generally acknowledged that ''curiosity killed the cat''. Due to my curiosity, I wanted to know why Hannah, the main character in this novel, would commit suicide. So I started reading Thirteen Reasons Why and fell into the story of Hannah Baker step by step. The process of reading this book was not only nervous but uncomfortable, but it was still an exciting reading experience for me.

The story develops in a novel way by listening to tapes that record Hannah's suicide note, which explains the reason why she would choose to end her life and how the people around her affect her to make this decision. And these tapes, including some people's evil deeds and Hannah's pains, would be sent to the first person on her list by herself. She wants those people to realize the things they have done and how they affect her. To make sure all the people would receive those tapes and take over the messages she would like to convey, Hannah intimidates the people on her list on the first tape that if they do not send these tapes to the next person, she would release the copy of the tapes to let everyone know how they treated her. From here, the story begins. When I read this part, I felt surprised and painful suddenly. It's not easy to tell someone the scars we have experienced. The process of explanation would let people recall the picture they get hurt, and that thing might hurt them again. So I think Hannah Baker is pretty brave that she could face the scars even if she just wants to make some people know they're all the perpetrators, which still needs courage. And the person listening to the tapes is Clay Jensen, who is fond of Hannah Baker.

To my surprise, Jensen, the listener, whose name isn’t on Hannah's list, is the only one who is out of the list but still receives the tapes. At first, the author doesn't leak any clue that there is someone to be mentioned just because Hannah wants to tell the story between that person and her, not accusing them. The story's development is so unexpected that I can't predict what will happen in the following pages. Beginning from the perspective of the most particular person makes this story more extraordinary. Jensen is not a perpetrator; he is just a person who likes Hannah very much, so when he knows all the things that happened to Hannah, he feels shocked and angry, and so do I as a reader. We could follow Jensen's steps to explore Hannah's inner world and feel how Hannah feels. There's a sentence that touches me so much, ''Then come to realize that you're making mountains out of molehills. Realize how petty you've become.'' It presents Hannah's despair and disappointment. It also conveys that not everything can go the way we expect it to. Eventually, Hannah can not change and go out of the situation she is in, and she falls into the abyss gradually; in the end, she decides to commit suicide.

I think what pains she is suffering may not be the primary thing that we should focus on; instead, how to avoid this kind of heartbroken decision is more considerable. Hannah doesn't tell anyone what happens to her, or try to ask for help; on the contrary, she just takes it all alone. Plenty of things may not affect us immediately. Still, if we don't find a suitable way to digest our emotions or troubles, it may lead to mental illness, and then perhaps cause an irreversible result. When we face some problems we cannot come across, try to divert our attention to other things, write down what we feel, or tell someone what's going on, and we may feel better. Everything can be changed by one decision; life is hopeful; all the things have a chance to get better if we want.
