Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the first novel in the Harry Potter series. The story is about how the main character Harry revealed his ancestry and developed a fantastic adventure. Harry’s ordinary life was changed swiftly on his eleventh birthday. The recognition of being a wizard makes him realize why he was able to accidentally cast a spell. To his surprise, he was a celebrity in the Wizarding World. After entering Hogwarts, the school of learning witchcraft and wizardry magic, he met Ron and Hermione. One day, they unintentionally discovered a vicious conspiracy about stealing the magic stone, then, they determined to protect the stone. After facing arduous ordeals with faithful friendship and tremendous courage, they conquered the difficulties. In the end, the magic stone was successfully saved. Through the stone, Harry was going to uncover the mystery of his ancestry and explore the next unknown journey.

After reading the novel, I learned the ways of maintaining relationships can be different. For the negative example, Malfoy counting on the wealthy family was arrogant and selfish. He treated two submissive friends as his lackeys. On the school train, Malfoy attempted to have a connection with Harry of his big name, and as a result, Harry turned him down. Malfoy’s way of friendship maintenance is fragile and unsustainable, and it’s based on his benefits instead of searching for the common good. This selfishness leads to unhealthy companionship and makes friends keep their distance from him. On the contrary, Neville, an unremarkable but thoughtful boy, was Harry’s good friend. When Harry almost broke the school rules for further investigation of the magic stone, Neville admonished him to obey the discipline for Harry’s benefit. He didn’t follow Harry blindly without a second thought. Therefore, the friendship is more solid.

The deepest affection in the story was between Harry, Ron, and Hermione. They all grew and gained advantages from the rapport. For example, Hermione, a clever witch, had no friends in the beginning because she was considered to be a professor pleaser by showing off her intelligence. After being encouraged by Harry and Ron, she could freely accept and embrace her true self without disguise. She also made more new friends. As another example, Ron was the youngest boy in his family. His five older brothers were excellent students at school. In addition, both of Ron’s best friends were the well-known Harry and the smartest Hermione. This made Ron lower his self-esteem and feel incapable of doing anything well. Nevertheless, after passing through difficulties with friends, Ron realized that everyone has different gifts and talents. It turned out Ron led Harry and Hermione to pass the chess task confidently for the protection of the magic stone. In the final example, Harry, a baby orphan without parents, was brought up but often mistreated by his aunt’s family. He had no friends until the life-changing moment of entering the Wizarding World. Ron and Hermione became his loyal friends, not due to his fame but the challenges that they overcame together. Because of the supportive, dependable, and loving friendship, Harry was able to resist temptation and defeat the enemy at the end of the story. With a strengthened relationship, they can face any task with complementary advantages and faithful love.

Whether in the Wizarding World or our real life, we all have to learn how to build good relationships with one another. A nice friendship between my friends and me needs contributions from each side, like the one Harry had. When I receive help from my homework partners, I offer them the assistance they need. Each of us is benefited from learning and teaching one another, and most importantly, we enjoy the companionship. By giving and taking feedback from counterparts, we all make progress on individual performance and accomplish great teamwork at school. To sum up, it’s worthwhile to learn interpersonal relationships from the characters in this novel. By paying more attention to the attitude that can improve our companionship, and avoiding being like selfish Malfoy, I believe that we can easily get along with others in harmony and even create a peaceful world in the future.
