Go Through Your Own Maze

Henry David Thoreau said, “Not until we are lost do we understand ourselves.” There’s no denying that obstacles are paved in our daily lives. We fall and lose direction. As losing our ways, we even forget who we want to be. Everyone does, so don’t feel anxious. Great though the struggle may be, it’s an opportunity for us to discover our true selves. This journey is explored in “The Devil Wears Prada”.

Everything starts with a small dream in a huge city. Andy is a girl owning a passion for being a part of the publication company. Rumor has it that anyone who works for Miranda, the queen of fashion, can get any job she desires. By coincidence, Andy comes to be Miranda’s assistant; however, she doesn’t belong to the fashion industry obviously. Based on her ignorance of clothes and brands, she has problems dealing with each request from Miranda. She appears to be an outcast in the gorgeous jail. One day, Andy changes her outfit and dresses in a fancy Chanel suit to get rid of being an outsider. She converts herself into a beauty, but not Andy, assimilating into the jungle of fashion seamlessly.

As the days go by, Andy acquires the competence in fashion business. She is selected as Miranda ‘s best assistant by virtue of her intelligence and aesthetic sense; gradually, she has overflowed with boutiques and intricate relationships. The longer she stays with Miranda, the more sophisticated she grows. Subsequently, she comprehends how much Miranda sacrificed for the vocation in their interaction. After an interpersonal communication, she recalls her goal is to be an editor, not a doll packed in extravagance, pretending to be another person. She leaves Miranda.

We should live of ourselves, by ourselves, for ourselves. Thousands of complications arise all the way. Study, family, and friendship compose a maze, and we are the challengers. What’s the destination? My answer is the real self, a timeless treasure. Nonetheless, while figuring out the inner voice, we are disoriented, being confined to a plenty of circumstances. We detour because of some obstacles; consequently, we forget our calling.

From my perspective, Andy’s story is a microcosm of society. The definition of our own become ambiguous under the overwhelming reality. It’s fortunate that Andy has an experienced mentor, Maranda. Understanding everything comes with a price, Maranda chooses to persist on what she values. Andy reaps a multitude of things from her teacher, especially this indispensable mindset. It is far from smooth journey, but an expedition to find her way through her "maze". There might not be a Maranda for us; hence, we’re supposed to take on this task on our own. When encountering unrest, just think of our goals. Take Yayoi Kusama, an artist of influence and affluence, as an instance. Her reputation doesn’t accompany with ease. Before shining, she was limited to the manacles of disregard and obscurity. But Yayoi Kusama never gives up and sends her original creativity to the globe successfully. Belief in self is the North Star. Follow the ray of beam, and we shall not go astray because every experience makes us stronger to solve the maze.

“The Devil Wears Prada” evokes desire embedded deeply in my heart. Retrospectively, I yearned for being a writer. Nevertheless, everyone told me that few authors have bright prospects; moreover, this career requires distinct abilities. I did try to make the fantasy fulfilled, but chose to give up at length. Regrettably, the eagerness faded because of distrust. Now I find out Andy weathers many crises bravely, being aware that torture is a path to success. Thanks to her, I no longer neglect the inaudible calling rooted in my heart. I’m enthusiastic about literature, and it’s enough to be my reason to go ahead. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood. Andy takes the one less traveled by, and so do I.
