The Hunger Game

Reined by the immoral authority for accumulative years, district twelve has been abused for centuries. The subjects suffered severe starvation and critical agony, having no power, to rebel against the capital. Katniss Everdeen, the 16-year-old girl, or one of the subjects of the capital in district twelve, had a family to provide for, volunteered to substitute her beloved sister as a tribute, who was drawn and compelled to participate in the hunger games and spared no effort to survive to the last. No one, particularly those from the destitute districts, wants to join in the game to struggle for their lives in exchange for a luxurious and prosperous life afterward. Ironically, it is, without any moral integrity, an indispensable entertainment for the capital and I can’t even conceive such a miserable life as they exist in.

Scarcely did Katniss arrive at the capital before she fascinated all the people, impressing them greatly and being referred to as a girl on fire with her gorgeous dress seeming to glitter. Katniss pretended to be crazy in love with Peeta, the tribute from district twelve, which is nothing but a tactic. Despite her popularity, Katniss, just like the other tributes, had to gamble on her life to win; so competitive was the fight that it immediately started in full swing. On the first day, eleven of them went into death. In the following days, they repeatedly narrowly escaped the jaw of the lethal attack from the rivals, seeking sufficient food and adequate water resources to sustain physical strength. After defusing all the crises to the last and even tried to commit suicide in an attempt to make the capital an object of ridicule and show their dissatisfaction, fearlessly. “It must be a fragile system if it can be brought down by just a few berries,” Katniss remarked.

Hence, I love this novel to the utmost, for its phenomenal, exceptional description of the character’s mental states. Besides, the intensive and unpredictable plot twists strike a responsive chord with me. All the characters hold their traits and the desperate past but still live courageously, facing the depressive memory. Of all the characters, I admire Katniss the most, not only for her unconditional love for her sister but also for her persistence to seize every opportunity to live on. Her fearlessness to speak her mind exerts a tremendous influence on me. I behold that I have never possessed such bravery as she does, on accounts that I am limited by the established rules and having little leisure time to while away. There’s no one but craves for freedom; yet, so mere of the masses will endeavor to change the status quo.

I am appreciative of the struggle by those warriors so that we can live with ease, enjoying democracy. Throughout the world, dictatorship still tyrannizes over some countries, oppressing human rights. I consider this book an image and reflection of the globe-spanning political abuse, as repeatedly happens over the tides of history, and the revelation of torment that the subjects are forced to tolerate. I think that the government, based on humanitarian grounds, should never treat the citizens as an object of arbitrary disposal.

Yet, it was a great misfortune that there are greater numbers of similar circumstances, still deteriorating and striking in a few countries, reducing countries to crisis. With the surging and expanding sense of democratic rights for human beings, demonstrations break out in Thailand. It’s not as much the rebellion of irrational tradition compelling the citizens to respect and regard the king as the sacred authority as the government’s inability to contain the pandemic and the overextended power of the king that triggers this fully-concerned protest. While feeling how fortunate I am to be born with freedom, I can’t help but entertaining sorrow, to see what’s occurring in Thailand.

"A single spark can start a prairie fire”, where there is hope to ameliorate the invasion of our rights, there will be a turning point. Someone will stand out to conflict with the authority, gaining popular support, and leading us to strive for our deserved right. And perhaps, we, with the encouragement of this book and our determination, can make the world slightly different.
