Great Gilly Hopkins

Choosing the right book to read seems rather important. A good book can not only grant people happiness for a long time after reading but also distills the sorrow out of our mind. On the contrary, a book inappropriate in some senses will make people feel bored. However, the book I am going to talk about has been with me for many years, and whenever monotony strikes me, I will turn to it for heart-warming embrace. The story narrated fascinates me; consequently, reading on reading seems inevitable. Upon glancing this book on the book list, I know this is my final yet irreversible pick.

Gilly Hopkins was born and grew up in foster homes. Living in the drastically changing foster homes and being faced with migration at times, Gilly learned to have a bad attitude towards each foster home. Gilly used these methods to protect herself from being harmed, but underneath her appearance lay her stubborn persona. There remained slight touch of maternal desire hidden in her heart. The social worker, Miss Alice, again took Gilly to a new foster home titled Hopkins Home. Everyone possesses benevolence, being willing to accept Gilly, but Gilly got involved in school gangbang, which brought about both discipline issue and, worry that the principal suffered from. Miss Hopkins was not scared of Gilly's attitude; instead, she displayed a caring heart to frustrate Gilly. By chance, Gilly found some money in the home of Mr. Randolph, and stole Miss Hopkins's money. She intended to use the money to be in search of her own mother in San Francisco, but when Gilly reached the station, she was detected out by the conductor, who informed the police of her malfeasance. As a result, Gilly went back to Miss Hopkins's home again. As Gilly began to accept and start to fall for Miss Hopkins's home, Gilly's grandmother suddenly appeared to take away Gilly. Gilly hesitated between staying there or escaping with her never-seen-before grandmother. Quite reluctant as she was, Miss Hopkins could not stop Gilly's grandmother from taking away Gilly, seeing Gilly following her grandmother and left out of sight. It the end, Gilly really saw her mother in person, but her mother was not what she had imagined. Purely for money’s sake, her mother masked to welcome her long lost daughter. She reluctantly came back right after two days to see Gilly. This was unacceptable to Gilly, and she telephoned Miss Hopkins to tell her everything. With Miss Hopkins's advice, Gilly calmed down to take her family.

After reading it for the fourth time, I finally come to realize that every single young man has an experience different in situations. Gilly under the author's description acted as if she were alive before me. She took care of a sensitive and fragile little girl, and knew how bad the little girl yearned for her mother’s love. These episodes were all I have not realized before. I think that this book can be illustrating and educational because each character's phases of moods, and emotions are portrayed very well, and the storyline is excellently organized and structured. The entire contents of the book are brilliant. It also receives the silver medal in US Newbery Award in 1979. Digesting this book cements me the weakness in my mind and endorses me with strength. It is worth being read time after time. I look forward to enjoying it next time, awaiting the possibilities to explore the undiscovered to enrich my soul and intelligence.
