Life with wonders-Daddy-Long-Legs

Knowledge is power, but through reading we can change knowledge into power. Reading is not only for recreation but also for understanding more profoundly about life and different cultures. On an afternoon, I accidentally got a glimpse of “Daddy-Long-Legs”. At the moment, I was strongly attracted by its content. Till now this masterpiece still left a distinctive image in my mind.

Can you ever imagine an orphan’s life in college? The protagonist, Judy Abbott, is from the John Grier orphanage and she is later sent to college by an anonymous trustee. The only requirement is that she must write to him every month. Looking tall in his figure, he is called “Daddy-Long-Legs” by Judy. At first, her life at college is full of excitements and surprises. There, she experiences things that she has never experienced before. By chance, she gets to know her roommate’s uncle—Jervie Pendleton. They have become acquaintances, so far as to fall in love with each other. To her surprise, the man she has loved turns out to be Daddy-Long-Legs.

This story portrays a teenager’s youth with passion and humor. Judy’s adventure in her college life encourages us readers to be forever curious, test new opinions and try different things. In the story, Judy shows her curiosity about every new thing she encounters in college. It's reasonable. Supposing you were Judy, growing up in an orphanage without the companion of either parents or siblings, you would probably be the same as Judy. Despite growing up alone, Judy never feels pessimistic, but remains optimistic and energetic, living her college life to the fullest. Judy shows passion and love to the unknown world. It is her bravery that leads her to adapt to the environment and sustains her through the college years. We should learn to be positive and look on the bright side of life.

Great hope makes a great man. As for Judy's dream to be a writer, she strives to achieve her dream, never knocked down by failures. She makes efforts and successfully completes her first novel. Once, she thought she’s going to become a famous writer, yet on the second day, the publisher rejected her “masterpiece” and sent it back. Feeling dispirited, Judy didn’t let difficulties knock her down. God helps those who help themselves. I think due to her earnest and diligence, her dream would someday come true. “Dreams truly make people great”.

While reading the book, I started to wonder: Being an adolescent, did I really enjoy my life just as Judy does in the story? With much schoolwork to complete every day, it’s hard for us to really stop and see what’s around us. It has been a long time since I last stopped to see the flower blossom in my garden and feel the breeze gently kissing my face. After finishing reading the book, I realized that the truth of life is to enjoy every moment and I decided to grasp every opportunity to appreciate the scenery of life.

Most of all, I really enjoy this book. Though the book is composed of letters written by Judy but it isn’t tedious at all. The author Jean Webster uses vivid description to portray an unforgettable teenager’s mind. With some cute illustrations drawn by Judy inside, it also adds some spice to the book. This book gives me the courage to pursue my own dream. Once you open the book, you can scarcely stop reading it! Let’s dive in the book, and digest the words, little by little!
