Diary of a Wimpy Kid

“You got kids like me who haven't hit their growth spurt yet mixed in with these gorillas who need to shave twice a day. And they wonder why bullying is such a big problem in middle school.” That is what Greg Heffley, the protagonist of Diary of a Wimpy Kid series wrote down in the opening of his diary. Although there aren't a lot of big words or difficult sentences in this book, no doubt it reflects a lot of problems which teenagers encounter nowadays.

This is a diary written by a boy named Greg who is studying in the middle school. Like every normal teenager, he also faces a lot of problems in this awkward age. In the first page of the book, he emphasized that what he is writing is a journal, not a diary. The word “diary” and “journal” means so different to him. In the age of his, people really care a lot about others opinions and how others think. And obviously, he really doesn’t want to be relevant to the word sissy.

In the book, Greg writes down his feelings about everything in his life, including the campus, classmates, teachers, neighborhoods, friends, and his family members and so on. He clearly describes the personalities of the people around him and written them down in humorous words. With the illustration and the hilarious words, something really normal would turn out amusing and interesting. Although there are some culture differences between America and our country, it still doesn’t stop me from enjoying the book. Sometimes, reading it recalls the memories that I had just in his age.

Like Greg, I do tease and make fun of the people around me; I do come up with some crazy and stupid ideas; I do went through hard times with friends, there are too many common points between us. Just like most of the people, we are all normal human beings, not too perfect, but not inferior. On the path of growing up, we sometimes feel that the whole world is blocking our way, and then we complain, we blame, we worry, we cry, but still, there are sometimes when we smile. Despite we can’t avoid from encountering setbacks; although we had spent a lot of time in things that seems to be nonsense when thinking afterwards, while looking back at these memories when we are at the age of sixty, friendship, popularity, attention and expectation, such kind of worries that teenagers have would surely become an priceless and pleasing remembrance.

All in all, the stories in the book are very close to the life in reality, problems such as bullying, friendship, family, and self-esteem really resonate with the readers. Like many comic strips, although it looks hilarious on the outside, it hides a lesson in it. This journey is filled with joy, sadness, and being a teenager’s worries. By reading it, it’s like recalling the years that passed and walking anew on the path that we had went through before.
