Tuesdays with Morrie

“Death ends a life, not a relationship.” When I first browsed through Tuesdays With Morrie in the bookstore, I was surprised that this quotation really entered deeply into my heart that Morrie regarded death as a life’s transition. I have comprehended that this book is not only about friendship between Morrie and the author Mitch Albom, but also about love, death, and the meanings of life.

Morrie was Mitch’s university professor. After he graduated, they promised to keep in touch. But after several years, Mitch became a successful sports columnist and bustled about his work. Yet, for a period of time he had a bad relationship with his girlfriend as well as was perplexed about his life. Afterwards, Mitch saw Morrie on the news that he was diagnosed with ALS; he remembered their promise and was urging to visit him. In the last three months of Morrie’s life, they made appointments to meet in every Tuesday to talk about death, love, marriage and so on. These fourteen Tuesdays they met show Morrie’s powerful words to make Mitch realize that the fame and gain he was pursing, are not as valuable as love. Also, the meetings brought him different vision to apprehend his life.

‘‘Death’’ is always a critical word for people because it may contain sadness, fear and unknown. As the story says’’ Everyone knows they’re going to die, but nobody believes it.’’ In fact, I was the one who didn’t want to face it. However, after I read this book, the words how Morrie talked about death are significant. They are powerful and hard to eliminate in my mind. As Morrie says’’ Once you know how to die, you learn how to live.’’ Life is like an extraordinary journey, and death is like a next great adventure. Morrie used his wisdom to express death and the meaning of life at the same time, also to spread the abstruse philosophy into short, profound words. Either about death or about the value of life, this book includes lots of life education. Morrie used the same way to represent them. And these words are like radiance in darkness to guide someone who feels disoriented into a right way.

What really motivates me is the spirit of Morrie; he didn’t give up his life after being diagnosed with ALS. It was hard to envision how difficult to bear the pain and how to face the suspicious and fearful future. Yet, Morrie still manifested optimism and insisted on seizing every day in his life. Besides, he used the rest of his life to teach us these specific lessons. The purpose is to tell us to strive to be alive, as well as to indicate that life can be splendid in the last moment. However, most of the people really don’t experience the world wholeheartedly because they may do things automatically without thinking, not to speak of living our life fully. Therefore, we should pursue the meaningful life of beings. Just like Morrie says’’ The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to creating something that gives you purposes and meanings.”

And I believe I will overcome obstacles more easily, and experience my life in the future, because what Morrie teaches us has changed my merits of living. In the book, the author doesn’t magnify his story to make it more fascinating; he uses the ordinary words to stir up readers’ emotions. When I closed the book I was pleased and surprised that the wisdom sentences that Morrie said still remain in my mind. Tuesdays with Morrie provides a space for readers to think about what the essence of beings, but also beacon us the way to season our own life.
