Diary of a Wimpy Child

Diary of a Wimpy Child stars a badly-behaved middle student Greg Heffley, who screws everything up. Consequently, he is always bringing others trouble and distress. There is a fair chance readers will burst into laughter despite themselves when they enjoy the book because of the amazing, entertaining plot, through which readers can easily identify with the protagonist. To be specific, all the marvelous incidents happening to Greg can make you reminisce about your childhood, filled with happy anecdotes and dispiriting setbacks. Hence, it’s no exaggeration to describe the book as the epitome of everyone’s dynamic childhood.

Through the leading character’s detailed and vivid recordings of his life in the novel, I am allowed a glimpse into his abundant life and can learn from him. As mentioned in the preface, Greg is literally a trouble-maker. In one scene, Greg intends to run for student government. However, his plan ends up ruined by himself because he should calumniate his competitor with an eye to becoming the ultimate winner. From his fiasco, I have learned by no means can we get success at the expense of others, because this approach to victory is immoral as well as unscrupulous. Plus, in one chapter, Greg has once lost his friend because of his cruel betrayal, which totally destroyed their friendship. It dawned on me trust along with loyalty is of utmost significance in the interpersonal relationship. On the other hand, Greg has done many good deeds worth admiration and complements. In one impressive scene, I am touched by his resolution to win Rowley’s trust back by protecting and apologizing to him to restore their shattered friendship. I learn from him that all you have to do is apologize sincerely and devote unconditionally to win back one’s trust. Moreover, Greg, who thinks himself infallible, transforms an obsolete basement into a unique haunted house with Rowley and successfully earns two bucks. Their great victory makes me understand, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” and “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” Children as they are, they dare to accomplish their ideal with their ambition, courage, confidence and passion, which are essential for one’s success. Young as Greg is, he teaches me a lot of life philosophy.

Besides Greg, I think that Rowley is another soul figure who makes the novel colorful and worth-reading. I admire Rowley’s courage and generosity to pardon Greg, which reflects how much Rowley treasures Greg. From Rowley, I understand condoning others takes a lot of courage, but pardon can make you and others happier and yours’ relationship will become more intimate. Greg and Rowley’s friendship reminds me of the importance of friends.Good friends are like superb books, broadening your knowledge. Good friends are like glaring lighthouses, giving you directions. Good friends are like efficacious pain-killer, alleviating your agony. Other characters helping Greg are his affectionate parents. They are always around and caring about Greg, just like our selfless parents. When Greg is in a dilemma, they provide advice and placate him. When Greg is on nine clouds, they share his ecstasy. For example, Greg’s father always endeavors to gratify him. Similarly, his mother always works hard to make him explore the meaning of life. She wants Greg to do the right things because she thinks, “It’s our choices that make us who we are.” All parents are willing to dedicate themselves to cultivating and loving their beloved children. We, as children, should not make them worried but make them understand how much we love and appreciate them.

In a nutshell, I highly recommend this fantastic book. Well goes the saying, “That is a good book which is opened with expectation and closed with profit.” After reading up on the book, you can reap lots of crucial life philosophy from Greg, which appears trifling but contains an abundance of hidden meanings worth learning. “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” In the book, you can tell Greg’s parents, siblings, along with his intimate, are loyal to him and are nothing but books motivating and accompanying him always. Likewise, you, as a reader, can find the book a loyal friend, which can entertain and inspire you all your life.
