Diary of a Wimpy Kid #2: Rodrick Rules

Fascinated by Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Greg Heffley’s Journal, I couldn’t help but pick up the sequel to this book and start reading it. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules, the author puts more emphasis on the interaction between Greg and his elder brother, Rodrick, who often made Greg go nuts by doing something which really irritated him. The illustrations in this book are as humorous and hilarious as the ones in the previous book, and they also play a crucial part in describing Greg’s thoughts and feelings. Even though I am the only child in my family, it is not hard for me to imagine how my life would probably be supposing I had wicked siblings like Greg.

The whole story began when Greg went into the women’s restroom by mistake, and was caught and thus threatened by Rodrick to follow his orders; otherwise Rodrick would disclose Greg’s secret. Sometimes in school or at home I make a fool of myself due to my carelessness. Fortunately, I don’t have to worry about my secret to be leaked out, yet I always feel embarrassed about my ridiculous behavior. While I was still an elementary school student, I looked forward to the Halloween party held by the school annually. When I entered the third grade, I even made a witch hat and decorated it with ribbons on my own. On Halloween, I put on the witch costume I had prepared for myself excitedly, stepped into the classroom, and expected envious expressions on my classmates’ faces for my fancy costume. However, what I discovered was that the whole class stared surprisingly at me, and—they wore uniforms. It suddenly struck me that the Halloween party was meant only for the lower grades, and I then felt that I was more like a “clown” rather than a witch. This awkward experience was so shameful that I still recalled it from time to time even so many years after.

In this series, Greg and Rodrick’s parents cared about their children a lot, and they tried every means to make the two teenage brothers behave well. I can totally realize the effort they made to teach their sons to tell right from wrong. Frankly speaking, just like Greg and Rodrick, I was sometimes annoyed by my parents’ repeated preaching and considered it unnecessary when I was little. Nevertheless, as I grow up and become mature, I feel more grateful for my parents’ patience while teaching and taking care of me, and I seldom make troubles or mess things up anymore now. From reading this book, I am able to take a different insight into how to get along with my family members and appreciate what my parents have done for me. I shall learn to be a more thoughtful daughter.

After reading over Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules, I finally figured out why Diary of a Wimpy Kid series can strike a chord with me all the time. It reminds me of what I thought and how I felt in my childhood years. Most important of all, the story is familiar enough for me to understand, so I never find this book boring or obscure while reading it.
