The GIVER

“Do you think your world that you’re familiar with is true and real?” I believe that can be as the symbol of The Giver. Remembering in the beginning semester, we should choose one book to read for the course. When our teacher was introducing The Giver, I have had an interest in this book. To my surprise, plots full of suspense and mystery are out of my imagination.

It starts from a community that there is no pain, war, music, colors or even love. Everything looks exactly in perfect and happiness. In fact, all of people is arranged and controlled by the Committee just like their leader. Every December, they will hold a ceremony for 12-year-bellowing children. Each kid is getting a gift to stand for age. When they are 12 years old, they will be assigned jobs by the Elders in the Committee. A little boy, Jonas was assigned the special, the Receiver given the memories from the Giver alone holding them. In the training, Jonas experienced many things which he hadn’t ever had. Gradually, the memories change his thinking. One day, Jonas saw his father releasing one of the twins, a regulation that forbids having dual, he couldn’t accept this extremely terrible and awful anymore. Therefore, he decided to escape his community with Gabriel who will be released. On purpose, he gave many memories to himself and Gabriel to live and evade the Committee’s search. Finally, he arrived at a new and wonderful world different from original.

The story in Jonas’ training was one of the most catching my eye, because I could realize the real where he lived. Such as, the author uses an unusual way to describe that Jonas saw an apple changing but quickly returning. At that time, he didn’t understand what was going on. Reading here, I only thought he might look wrong and regarded as be unimportant that the author wanted to put off plots. In training, the Giver gave one of memories to Jonas, he has known what colors are and the apple he saw before is red. While I read this portion, I was tremendously shocked and astonished that their world was monochrome. It is a great and crucial part that the book is so successful that I’m always excited to meet next chapter.

Sometimes, I will think are people in the story in miserable or in bliss. Although they are unable to enjoy beauty of colors, melody of music and warm of love, they don’t suffer from guiltless pain from war or depress mood from fear. They deem that they live pleasure and pleasant. However, does the modern think about like them? Substances all around world is enough instead they cannot satisfy us. We own more lovely and nice objects, but we always complain that our fate is defensive and imperfect. Our desires are eager for more and more things all the time. Maybe it is a point that the author hopes humans to reflect.

“Few are those who see with their own eyes, and feel with their own hearts.” said Albert Einstein. Using heart to feel the truth life plays a major part in modern times. Today, we seldom treasure what we hold and always persuade what we don’t have. We should slow down our step and observe carefully cheerful things around us. Perhaps we will receive another discovery.
