The 10 Most Inspiring Speeches in World History- Historic Peacemakers

General idea:

The book is about ten famous speech tellers in the history. It described what they did for their society, and how they have influenced the people. It is a book that inspires you to devote yourself to the community and strive for a peaceful world.

Attainment:

Some people live for the fortune, some people live for the fame, and some people live for the power. However, there are some people living for making the world better.

I think peacemakers just fall into this category. They make efforts for the world, some in big ways and others in small ways. They work to end wars, conflicts, and fight for democracy.

“You must become the change you wish to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi once said that. Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. He went to college in London and became a lawyer after graduating. Mahatma, meaning “great soul”, is corresponded to what he has done for India.

Living his wife with two goals: to set India free from Britain’s rule, and to free Indians in the world from prejudice. He did become the change during World War II.

Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi was nominated for Nobel Peace Prize five times, but it was never awarded to him.

He also has a great impact on an American human rights fighter, Martin Luther King Jr., who was born on January 15, 1989. He went to school to become a minister because he thought the leaders of black churches should fight against discrimination.

When he was a student, he heard a lecture about Mahatma Gandhi, which inspired him to start his nonviolent revolution against segregation.

In 1955, a black woman named Rosa Parks was arrested because she did not give her seat to a white man. To support her action, King led a movement to boycott using Montgomery city’s bus system. On August 28, 1963, over 200,000 indignant Americans gathered in Lincoln Memorial Park in Washington, D.C. for one of the largest civil rights rallies in history.

“I have a dream that one day on the hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood, ...” said Martin, which touched people’s hearts. In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. Segregation became illegal afterwards.

King was chosen as TIME magazine’s Man of the year, and he won the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for being the “first person in the Western world to have shown us that a struggle can be waged without violence,” according to the Nobel Committee.

Both of Gandhi and King are good role models, and they set some good examples for us to follow. Therefore, when we face some difficulties or when we are in serious situations, we can try to adopt some peaceful strategies and ways to convey our opinions instead of taking violent action. Let’s work together to make the world better.
