Gone withe the Wind

Taking place in the southern United States, the story of “Gone with the Wind” unfolded during the America Civil War. Scarlett O’Hara was a pretty and attractive girl drawing tremendous attention from males. She was smart and arrogant, but sometimes quite irrational; nevertheless, she changed drastically after the war washed everything away and left nothing for her. She struggled desperately for herself and her beloved homeland “Tara”. Afterwards, Scarlett was transformed into a woman full of perseverance and tenacity.

People may be critical of some of her behavior. By virtue of money, she married Frank, for whom she didn’t have any affection at all. Yet, I appreciate the personal trait that she sacrificed her loyalty and reputation so as to survive in a miserable situation. Every girl is eager to find their own Prince Charming and leads a happy life permanently. However, she never eluded from the cruel reality. Instead, she stood up to fight against the cruel destiny. Igniting a kind of fire called persistence, Scarlett made the most of her perspiration and tears to reconstruct everything she had once possessed. Regardless of others’ contempt for her, she became the strong testimony to the quote:”No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

What is “Tara”? To me, Tara is a symbol of home. Scarlett plucked up her entire courage to defend Tara, where her root lay and her countless memories abided. Home is where the heart is. Like the warmest harbor, my home always gives me a sense of security and love. When I collapse, it is home that supports me to keep stepping forward and rise above every challenge and obstacle. Home is the place which is filled with roars of laughter and has the softest bed in the world healing wounds and sorrows. I have watched the movie “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial” directed by Steven Spielberg. In the movie, the little ET kept repeating “ET phone home.” and pointing at the planet where it lived. I think it implies that though we are curious about things outside and keen to explore the world with our hands and hot-blooded minds, the feeling of home still resonates in the bottom of our hearts. There is a song called “Home” sung by Michael Bubel; he sang, “In Eden, Paris, and Rome. And I wanna go home” Undoubtedly, we can immerse in significant buildings and fabulous cultures around us, but east or west, home is the best.

The romantic story of “Gone with the wind” indeed exposes the ugly side of human beings. In her lifetime, Scarlett had three marriages. However, she still dreamed of marrying Ashley, who was Melanie’s husband. In addition, she didn’t value the relationship with Butler until she lost it. “Crying for the moon” is the trait that everyone has. Our lust is endless. We may crave for an unprecedented sports car after having a functional car. We seldom cherish the things we have already had. People tend to chase after the splendid sunset and forget the gorgeous flowers on the ground. Trying to change these odd perspectives, we will find there is always something we can treasure a lot. We can think of Nick Vujicic, a man without limbs, if we complain that we ran too slowly. We can think of Oprah Winfrey, who suffered from sexual assault in her childhood, when we nag about having a boring childhood. We can think of those African children who are denied education when we take schooling for granted. Carpe diem! Enjoying what we have is the key to real delight. If we can cherish everything, we will find anything like the moon is even more glorious than the magnificent fireworks!

“Gone with the Wind” is a classic novel that is rich in meanings of life. Once in a while, we aren’t satisfied with our circumstances and feel disoriented. Yet, navigating various obstacles, Scarlett stood a reminder of perseverance and optimism. Instead of feeling regret for what can not be undone, we, like Scarlett, can also tell ourselves confidently, ”After all, tomorrow is another day!”
