Sherlock Holmes

Almost no one can commit a crime without learning any trace, so there are always some ways that can help us know how a criminal does it. Not only observing carefully and thinking continuously, but also assuming conditions and verifying hypotheses are important. The above is what I know from Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes is a detective with a very quick mind. He knows everything about almost any subject, especially science. Handling a case, he knows many things through his subtle observation. What’s more, his wisdom even allows him to predict what will happen, so he can take much earlier actions than other people. Having these abilities, he always solves problems which the police and other detectives cannot deal with.

My favorite part of this book is Sherlock’s insightful analysis on corpses. Seeing how he analyzes, I’m always surprised by how much he has observed. I admire him very much. There is one person who has the same feelings just like me, that is Dr. Watson. When he first met Sherlock, he’s also surprised by Sherlock’s analysis. From Dr. Watson's duty in Afghanistan to his therapist, Sherlock has been right about everything. That's exactly what makes Watson feel unbelievable and respect Sherlock Holmes very much.

Sherlock's psychological warfare with the killer is brilliant, too. He sees through the killer’s mind and observes the killer’s every move. Then, he starts to think. What he would do if he were the killer. What’s more, he even takes some actions to force the killer make flaws. Although the author doesn’t tell us the consequence of the psychological warfare, I think the answer appears on the killer’s face prior to his death. Whether Sherlock is the winner or not, his inference is impressive, and no one can deny his talent.

Still, to my observation and curiosity, why is Sherlock always solving others' problems but not his own? My analysis is that he knows what his problems are but he cannot solve it. For example, he has few friends, and even some people hate him! Though he is super intelligent, he still has no way to improve his own situation, so he evades the problem by solving others’ problems. However, having this personal issue, he has more time to think, and it helps him a lot when handling a case. If I had a chance to meet him, I would suggest that he spends more time on his problem and strike a balance between his interests and his life.

In our dairy life, careful observations can help us to find the most unexpected things in the environment. Thinking twice can help us avoid making foolish mistakes. Assuming any condition which may occur can reduce the surprise when the events happen, and it can also prevent dangerous situations.

To sum up, Sherlock’s abilities can be used not only on a case but in our lives. However, if these abilities are over-used or used in bad way, it would not be good. Rather, we should decide the purpose and the best timing to use when we have these extraordinary abilities.
