Frindle

It was a story about a creative boy, Nick, and a serious teacher, Mrs. Granger. Mrs. Granger taught language arts and enjoyed dictionary very much –almost worshipped it. Nick thought it was unbelievable that there’s actually such a boring person in the world! One day, after reading an article and listening to the teacher’s explanation of the origin of words. Nick came up with a big idea after class. He created a new word “frindle.” It was the same meaning as a pen. Unexpectedly, the new word was loved by the students at school and was spreading across the country. Almost everyone used “frindle” instead of “pen,” and there’s nothing Nick could do to stop it.

After reading this book, I suggest that students in Taiwan should be more active in class. We should be initiative to raise our hands and share our opinions with teachers and classmates more often without fear. All classes can have a discussion and come up with many great ideas. We can learn far more than we expect. Students in Taiwan also need to learn Nick’s learning attitude. While Mrs. Granger only gave Nick an assignment to have a report for the next class, Nick may be a bit unpleasant because his free time was compressed. However, he still did his best reading through dictionaries with patience to find out where all the words came from. We might appear casual and complain continually while doing the report. Thinking differently, we can seize this opportunity to learn more than other classmates. Since we spend time doing something, we are about to have gain. Don’t let the precious time fly!

I also think that people have unlimited possibilities. Although Nick was only a fifth-grade boy, he knew what he could do and wanted to do. His clever mind came up with the new word “frindle.” He made the word from meaningless letters to a brand new word and even became a word that could be found in the dictionary. In our whole lives, how many people can accomplish these things?

Words are not only words in the dictionary that are already be used for hundreds of years. Words are to be created. In the story, adults were accustomed to use the words in the dictionary, so they ignored the power and creativity of words and languages.

Parents first get really mad without realizing what happened when their children are into trouble in school like what Nick had done. I think parents should learn from Nick’s mom, Mrs. Allen. After a thorough understanding of the incident, parents should point out errors to their children if they are wrong. If it is just like Nick created a new word, and it became a buzzword, parents shouldn’t flinch though the school is furious. Distinguishing the right or wrong of an event is really important. If it happens on the court, the judge shouldn’t be influenced by the opinions of people with high rank, or it will cause unfair adjudications and affect someone’s entire life.
