The Giver

It was a winter vacation assignment and as a member of the ILTO (International Lazy Teenager Organization) I didn’t categorize it in the easy job section, so I typed ‘’The Giver’’ in Google’s little white box. At first I saw plenty of sources that I can copy and paste, so I clicked into one of the most non-eye catching option (just to incase our teacher went ahead of me) and read the summery of the book. I thought well~ good enough for me~ So I copied it and finished my winter vacation assignment. With eyes on the book cover staring at me I couldn’t help but shivered, the exact same day I had a dream about the old man on the cover became my English reading teacher and that he knew all about how I finished my reading report. I was scared to death and then woke up from the nightmare in sweat. The next thing I remember doing was apologizing to the old man on the cover and deleted the file of my homework. I drenched myself into the book, one day after another I was more and more fascinated by the plot.

In this book, The Giver, the author Lois Lowry uses her imagination to build a perfectly organized neighborhood,a neighborhood without pain, without sorrow, without any war or crime. People in young age has a place to learn; the elders has suitable jobs and the old ones are carefully cared, there would be no hunger, no racial discrimination but a peaceful place like the Utopia, a place that lived in all humankind’s imagination. But as you know there are always two sides to one coin, the neighborhood that seemed like a paradise to us has its rules too. No resident should be able to see color; they should not have secrets nor lie to others, and couples are exactly assigned two kids one female one male, which are born by the birthmothers who never see their own children. Each age has it own assignment and its own regulations; if one violates the rules more than three times, he or she must be released. Everything is organized and planned so that nothing goes wrong or unpleasant…

This book perfectly shows the insatiable greed of human, like the main character in this book Jonas, his world was perfect for him before he tasted more pleasure than he could ever imagine, but he also understood that you surely can have everything. But if you can’t share it with others, it would be like you have had nothing at all. This is the book that celebrates the intelligence and integrity of humankind. The way Jonas acted after receiving the truth of life, the memories of true pain and pleasure, resembled the freedom of choices. In a world without choices people can’t really learn through every choices they made, they won’t be able to comprehend the splendid sense of satisfaction after walking through every frustration.

This book has so many moral lessons that people nowadays should learn about, and I am fully amazed by how “The Giver” has inspired me. We can’t take everything we have for granted, and that life could be so amazing if you let it. When you really take things seriously, nothing can’t be done. Everything, every changes has it’s own meaning and its own destiny toward your life. Everything is for changing ‘’You’’ into a better person! I guess everyone would have learned something from this book, maybe not like the way I put it, but this book is definitely the ‘’something’’ that is going to affect you.
