The Happy Prince And Other Tales: The Selfish Giant

The Happy Prince And Other Tales is a book of five stories. Although it is written for children, most of these stories are tragedies, making them different from those which usually ends happily. That’s why Oscar Wilde’s stories are always so fascinating. On account of this element, they attract not only children but adults to adore his works.

Besides, I have learned many things from The Happy Prince And Other Tales. The most inspirational story is The Selfish Giant, telling how the giant change after he finally discovered Spring coming after playing kids. Finding the reason Spring visit his garden again, he let the children play in his garden freely and even had fun with them together. At last, the giant was brought to Paradise because of his kindness.

Without a doubt, the story is giving us the idea of sharing, but we usually ignore the inspiration and continue in our previous ways. However, I have accepted other’s sharing when I was little. On my classmate’s birthday, he brought some cookies, candy and a big cake to share with us. I used to think this kind of behavior was completely silly, because no one would thank you sincerely. My stupid view was totally capsized when I saw the smile on my classmates’ face. They looked so joyful and satisfied, including the one who gave out his own desserts to us. From then on, I began to believe the saying, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” He shared his happiness and made everyone smile; therefore, he got much more gladness than he paid in a sense.

I hope I can be a person who has altruistic spirit, and I have been trying hard to share what I have with others. At first, I just gave my friends some of my desserts, I found them smiling happily. As time passed by, I have become one of the volunteers to help those who were in need. On the other hand, I started to donate some of my pocket money or invoice to charities. Before I did this, I have never felt such strong joy in my mind. Perhaps sharing is really a magic that brings happiness to both givers and receivers.

Aside from The Selfish Giant, the other stories in the book tell us the same idea. After inspired by my classmate, I read these tales again and again, and the affection contained really motivates me as many times as I read them. I think Oscar Wilde’s stories have made my determination stronger. I think I have been changed by the tales which are mostly read by the bed. The tales seem to be childish, but they have a special power that makes great effect upon us. Most important of all, we shouldn’t forget to assist and share with people. Help others, and that’s the way we show our respect to our innocent years and masterpieces of those warm-hearted fairy-tale-writers. Their stories make the world better, so does our good deeds.
