Walking Into The Little Prince

Have you ever been to Sahara? If you did, then have you met the Little Prince there? The Little Prince, written by Antoine de Saint Exupéry, actually tells the reader the story of this extraordinarily small but wise child. Growing up in the tiny asteroid B-612, one day the Little Prince left the planet to start his adventures because of some arguments with his rose. During his journey, he had visited several asteroids and encountered diverse kinds of people such as an autocratic king, a conceited man, a sad tippler, a boring businessman, an absurd lamplighter, and a rigid geographer. Each of them displayed some weird characteristics or perspectives that confused and frustrated the Little Prince. Finally, the Little Prince arrived at the Earth, meeting the narrator and enlightening him with his innocent but profound viewpoint of the adult world and the meaning of life. In the end of the story, under the help of a viper, the Little Prince returned to his tiny planet to reunite with his beloved rose, and the friendship between him and the narrator is cherished in their hearts for good. To begin with, in the story, under the author’s exquisite composing skills, many bizarre and ridiculous behaviors exhibited by adults are unfolded in front of the reader’s eyes and make them find everything fresh and new. That is, reading the story the first time, the reader would merely experience the humor of the author and burst out laughing due to the interesting plots. However, reading the story twice, they would begin to meditate upon the truth that the author aims to deliver to them: The naïveté, creativity, and imagination of people will be gradually weakened and strangled by the emptiness of the Vanity Fair as they grow up. Their eyes will be blinded and hearts be eroded by the secular fame, degenerating into a muddleheaded person who lives a dead-alive life.

In addition, the Earth’s uniqueness and wonderfulness unveiled by the Little Prince in the story also amaze the reader and inspire them to ponder over the relationship between people. In other world, through the Little Prince’s thinking, the reader understand that before the Little Prince saw the rose garden on the Earth, he used to consider that he was “rich” in having a special rose that was unmatched in the universe. Nevertheless, the sea of roses frustrated him, making him believe that what he owned was just “a common rose” that “[didn’t] make [him] a very great prince.” It was not until the fox pointed out the importance of “taming” did the Little Prince realize that the uniqueness of his rose was established upon the friendship between them. Via the Little Prince’s experience, the reader eventually come to understand that everything in the world is out of ordinary and worth valuing based on the affection that connects it with others.
