有同學問我,那「贏的機會很大」怎麼說?我說可以說 “have a high chance of winning”,不過當時我也沒把握是否有像 long odds 這樣簡潔的說法,就說我查查看再答覆她,後來我試查 “the opposite of long odds” ,結果出現:
In English we say an event has "long odds" if it is unlikely to happen, and "short odds" for the opposite. (https://english.stackexchange.com ›)
《麥克米倫高級英漢雙解詞典》Macmillan English-Chinese Dictionary 就收了long/short odds: an unlikely/likely chance of winning if you bet on a horse in a race or on the result of a competition 贏的可能性小/大
Merriam-Webster Dictionary 的解釋如下:
long odds: a poor chance of winning
The team has made some major improvements, but they still face long odds.

最近有人說 Google Translate 已經相當不錯,擔心學外文會沒出路,但我每次查 Google 翻譯,都覺得不用擔心,看看底下 Google Translate 就 long odds 與 odds look long 的翻譯:long odds 长赔率/賠率很高;odds look long 賠率看起來很長。令人不覺莞爾。(Jerome Su, Jan 9, 2020)
