最近台北新生南路3段台大附近，「白千層」開著滿樹白花。樹幹白色的白千層 (Melaleuca leucadendron)，英文叫 paper-bark tree 或 cajeput tree，樹皮像有幾千層，極易剝落 (with flaky, exfoliating bark)。它之所以演化出這種機制，是因為其原生地澳洲經常發生森林大火 (bush fire)，而白千層的層層樹皮就是它的防火衣。它不怕火燒，反而很高興大火把其他的樹木燒死，白千層就可稱霸天下了。它的種子經大火一燒，更容易萌芽，燒死的其他樹木的骨灰更成為它的肥料。它的花像白色小奶瓶刷，花粉有毒，敏感者吸入花粉會造成呼吸道過敏。
白千層學名 Melaleuca leucadendron，它的種名 (specific epithet) 的意思是白樹。The specific epithet (leucadendra) is derived from the Ancient Greek words (leukós) meaning “white” and (déndron) meaning “tree”, referring to the white bark of this plant.
現在流行的所謂「澳洲茶樹精油」(tea tree oil) 是白千層的近親，學名Melaleuca alternifolia 的「細葉白千層」(Melaleuca alternifolia, Narrow-leaved paperbark) 葉子提煉的，和茶樹毫無關係。Melaleuca alternifolia, commonly known as tea tree, is a species of tree or tall shrub in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. Wikipedia (Jerome Su, Oct 14, 19)
