自6月10日苗栗飛牛牧場出現「秋行軍蟲」 (Spodoptera frugiperda)，農委會證實是入侵國內首例，全台各地都陸續傳出災情。
我們英文課可以利用這類機會來教些有知識內涵、接地氣的英文。所謂的CLIL, STEM, STEAM, 跨領域英文，就是提倡這樣的理念。
秋行軍蟲的中文名稱來自英文 fall armyworm，簡稱 FAW。可請學生先看中文相關報導或《維基百科》，再看英文 Wikipedia 的描述。
你 Google “秋行軍蟲”，《維基百科》會自動出現「草地貪夜蛾」的詞條，沒關係，它就是「秋行軍蟲」的正式中文名稱，裡頭也有 (英語：Fall armyworm)。你可以點選 Languages 項，切換到 English，就會出現 Wikipedia對Fall armyworm的英文敘述。通常 Wikipedia 英文版資料比《維基百科》中文版內容豐富，往往多許多倍，正確度也高很多。英文版還交代為何叫 Armyworms (軍蟲)：Armyworms earned their common name by eating all plant matter they encounter in their wide dispersals, like a large army. 因為肆虐農作物如同大軍入侵般。
你也可以根據 fall armyworm 或學名 Spodoptera frugiperda 去搜索，會找到更多關於「秋行軍蟲」的英文資料。老師也可以補充「入侵物種」(invasive species)，「歸化種」(naturalized species) ，「原生種」(native species/indigenous species) 之類的自然生態詞彙。
如老師對 etymology 有興趣，可以探究學名 Spodoptera frugiperda 是什麼意思。
學名第一個字 Spodoptera 是屬名，你輸入 spodoptera etymology 就會看到 Definition of Spodoptera by Merriam-Webster 上有 History and Etymology for Spodoptera. New Latin, from Greek spodos -wood ash + New Latin -ptera. 所以 Spodoptera 是木灰 + ptera，如你不認識 ptera，再查 ptera etymology，就會出現 ptera - plural of pterón, “wing” 是翅膀的複數形。
學名第二個字 frugiperda 是種加詞 (specific epithet)，輸入frugiperda etymology，出現：Latin Dictionary (wildflowers.jdcc.edu/Latin%20Dictionary.html) Frugiperda -- Backward, evasive, hard to distinguish ...
雖然試過四五次，這個 Latin Dictionary 網站已點不進去，但我受到頁面上顯示 “Frugiperda -- Backward, evasive, hard to distinguish ...” 誤導，以為 frugiperda 原意是「難以辨識」。 但經台大昆蟲系前系主任石正人教授提醒，frugiperda 應是兩個拉丁字frugis (frugi) + perdere (perda) 組成。我再次查證相關字源，從 Frugi etymology 間接看到 Frugivorous 字源中出現 from Latin frugi-, stem of frux "fruit, produce" (see frugal) + -vorous "eating, devouring." 所以 frugi- 是指果實或作物；然後再查 perda - Wiktionary，解釋是 From Vulgar Latin *perdita, from the feminine of Latin perditus (“lost”), perfect passive participle of perdō (“I lose”).
最後還找到昆蟲專業網站 https://bugguide.net/node/view/40787 的解釋：Explanation of Names - Frugiperda: from the Latin "frugis; frux" (fruit) + "perdere" (to lose; to ruin); probably refers to the larval feeding habits, which can cause damage or loss of commercial crops.
因此我要修正之前的說法：Spodoptera frugiperda 學名原意應是「木灰色翅膀、毀損作物/果實」才正確。 (Jerome Su, 6/14/19, Revised 6/19/2019)
