美國作家海明威Ernest Hemingway於1952年出版The Old Man and the Sea，講述一位古巴老漁夫在海洋中與一條巨大的旗魚 (marlin) 搏鬥的故事。國內一般多把marlin音譯為「馬林魚」，其實marlin就是旗魚的一種。
旗魚是多種大型掠食性旗魚科海魚的通稱，長可超過4公尺。嘴有尖長的喙(bill)，因此英文統稱為billfish，中文則以其背鰭露出水面有如舉旗，故稱之為「旗魚」。據Joy Lanzendorfer，《老人與海》中的marlin是旗魚科藍旗魚屬的Atlantic blue marlin (Makaira nigricans, 黑皮旗魚)。

台灣有出現記錄的旗魚有5屬5種，其中旗魚屬的「平鰭旗魚」(Istiophorus platypterus)，又叫「雨傘旗魚」，英文是sailfish；至於台灣有產的「劍旗魚」 (Xiphias gladius)，雖然魚體似旗魚，但嘴喙為平扁的劍狀突出，分類學上屬不同科─劍旗魚科，英文叫swordfish。 (Jerome Su, Jan 1, 2018, Revised Jan 2, 2018)
